Katie Sorrell, RD, is the Interfaith Wellness Director for the Center for Community Health at the University of California, San Diego. Katie and the Interfaith team promote and support policy, systems, and environmental changes in faith-based settings within the SNAP-Ed framework.
Originally from small town Iowa, Katie received her B.S. in Dietetics from Iowa State University and completed her dietetic internship at San Diego State University. Katie began working at the Center during her internship and continued after becoming a Registered Dietitian. Now she is returning to the Center after a 10-year hiatus.
From 2000-2007, Katie (Bogue) designed and implemented SNAP-Ed interventions at the Center. She served as the Director of the San Diego and Imperial Regional Nutrition Network, overseeing the Power Play!, Latino 5 a Day, African American 5 a Day, retail and worksite wellness programs. Katie also provided direct nutrition education through Nutrition Link, a SNAP-Ed school-based program.
From 2007-2009, Katie served as the Iowa Nutrition Network Social Marketing Coordinator, broadening her SNAP-Ed experience to the state-level. While there, Katie was elected the 2007-08 co-chair of ASNNA (Association of State Nutrition Network Administrators). Katie was able to share the perspective of local, regional and state SNAP-Ed experiences with the association.
During her time in Iowa, Katie began a Masters of Divinity program at Bethel Seminary. She met her future husband, John, an American youth pastor living in China, the first day of seminary. Nine months later, they were married and living in Beijing! Over the next seven years, Katie and John served at international churches in Beijing and Singapore and led missionary projects throughout Asia.
The family repatriated to America in the fall of 2016 where John is the Generations Pastor at Journey Community Church in La Mesa and an adjunct professor at Bethel Seminary. Katie is actively involved at Journey, supporting the children and youth programs through curriculum writing and teaching.
Katie couldn’t be happier to be returning to the Center in a position that beautifully blends her SNAP-Ed knowledge and experience with her faith.
