Meredith Petersen is a Program Coordinator for the Center for Community Health – School Wellness Program. Currently, with funding from the Department of Defense, Meredith is implementing garden-based education with 1,711 students at 5 elementary schools in San Diego. Her engaging lessons link to Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards while fully utilizing the garden as an outdoor classroom. Meredith is looking forward to being a farm and garden education specialist for the Center for Community Health – improving the health of our children in San Diego.
Prior to working at the Center for Community Health, Meredith implemented and led the Network for a Healthy California’s Harvest of the Month program with First 5 playgroups in Humboldt County. She has acted as a liaison with farmers’ market managers to expand CalFresh and Market Match programs. While working with Community Alliance with Family Farmers, Meredith led the Know Your Farmer program – connecting youth to agriculture, healthy eating choices and local farmers.
Meredith has over 7 years of experience teaching elementary school children about environmental education. She is passionate about teaching our next generation. Meredith has worked with non-profits at home as well as abroad in Oaxaca, Mexico. Meredith is also proud to be a former AmeriCorps member.
In 2012, Meredith graduated from Humboldt State University, with a BA in International Studies and a minor in Spanish. As a young professional, Meredith realizes the value and importance of community relationships. Meredith is looking forward to bringing her experience in program planning and implementation, volunteer management, teaching, grant writing and media outreach to the Center for Community Health.
In her free time, Meredith enjoys going to the beach with her Black Labrador Frijoles, gardening, learning new words in Spanish, cooking-up fresh and innovative meals at home and spending time with family and friends.
