As an integral component of the Youth Development Initiative, the UC San Diego Refugee Health Unit recently created the Young Leaders Council (YLC). The purpose of the Young Leaders Council is to ensure that youth and young adults from refugee and immigrant communities have a voice in the design and development of programming and service, as well as opportunities to engage in advocacy and system change activities. 11 young leaders from 10 ethnic community based organizations involved in the San Diego Refugee Community Coalition are members of this council. Members of the YLC meet to design and deliver innovative programming that meets the needs of their communities, participate in training and planning activities relating to advocacy and system change, and conduct youth assessments
