Prevention of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (NIH consortium)

Bladder Health Clinical Center, UC San Diego Site

Role: Co-investigator with PI, Dr. Emily Lukacz (UC San Diego)
Description: This NIH NIDDK-funded U01 (multi-center study) project convenes an outstanding team of interdisciplinary researchers in basic science, clinical and public health to prevent lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in women and children. LUTS are common in women and girls, have a major negative impact on quality of life, and are a source of economic burden. Because the majority with LUTS do not seek care, prevention strategies are critical to decrease suffering and health care costs. Working with a national consortium of researchers, we aim to further understanding of modifiable risk factors for LUTS. Dr. Gahagan’s role is to lead research on primary prevention and early identification in childhood. In addition, she provides expertise on longitudinal studies and the “Developmental Origins of Health and Disease” framework.
