Thuy has been interning with the Lactation Supportive Environments (LSE) program since November 2019. A first year masters student in Public Health, Thuy has contributed greatly to the LSE team. Below is an internship reflection from Thuy, as well as two resources she created to discuss breastfeeding practices in the Vietnamese population.
Thuy's Reflection
Today marks my seven months (exactly!) as an intern with Lactation Supportive Environments (LSE) and it has been a wonderful journey to explore and learn about the intricacies of public health from these memorable opportunities. I understood that the vision, mission, and values of LSE aligned with my personal and professional interest to advance maternal and infant health through the Breastfeeding-Friendly San Diego (BFSD) initiative. However, I was so inspired by the knowledge and involvement the LSE staff, Shana and Lizzy, had shown me about public health through the sustainability projects. From shadowing onsite LSE training sessions to successfully facilitating a provider workshop event with the San Diego County Breastfeeding Coalition (SDCBC), I was amazed by the work ethic and community collaboration. My graduate experience evolved creatively and pedagogically from major projects, such as undertaking a BFSD program overview video and expanding on a population research of the Vietnamese community in San Diego. More so, it was the immense support that staff from LSE and SDCBC provided throughout my internship. I am incredibly humbled to be involved with the sustainability projects and proud of what I was able to contribute to help with longevity of these stellar organizations.
