Improving Muslim Youth Participation in Physical Education and Physical Activity

The Muslim Practical Guide was specifically developed to foster a better understanding of Islamic practices and address potential barriers faced by Muslim girls in engaging in physical activity. As part of the Center for Community Health, SNAP-Ed Faith-Based Wellness Program’s initiative, this comprehensive guide was introduced to Physical Education (P.E.) educators in the San Diego Unified School District. In collaboration with the Islamic Centers Bureau, over 70 P.E. teachers attended this enlightening forum, which emphasized the significance of physical health, gender equity, and the practice of modesty.

The introduction of the Muslim Practical Guide marked a significant step forward in improving Muslim youth participation in physical education and physical activity. By addressing cultural considerations and acknowledging the importance of modesty, the guide paves the way for Muslim girls to fully engage in sports and physical activities while adhering to their religious beliefs. The collaborative efforts of the Faith-Based Wellness Program and the Islamic Centers Bureau played a pivotal role in fostering a supportive environment for young girls, ensuring they have the opportunity to thrive and embrace a healthy lifestyle.

With the implementation of the Muslim Practical Guide, educational institutions are taking a proactive approach to promote inclusivity and empower Muslim girls in their pursuit of physical health. By equipping educators with the knowledge and tools to address cultural barriers, we can create a nurturing environment that accommodates the unique needs of every student.
