Nghi Dang, our Urban Food Equity Community Food Project Coordinator, was invited to be a guest speaker for Olivewood Gardens and Learning Center’s High School Leadership Program in January 2023.
Students participated in a workshop to learn about food justice in their communities. Nghi and Olivewood’s Adult & Teen Program Specialist, Ellyse Briand, led students through a workshop to understand and discuss food inequity problems and develop solutions to improve our urban food landscape in San Diego, with an emphasis on the importance of local, neighborhood grocery markets. In small groups, students designed their own ideal neighborhood market, focusing on both the storefront and interior elements. They presented their posters and discussed how each proposed element of the market served as a solution to addressing food and social injustices.
Olivewood’s High School Leadership Program focuses on local food systems, civic engagement, advocacy, and building community relationships. It is one of the many programs they have at their learning center. Check out their website to get involved.
