The San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative (COI) hosted their 2020 end-of-the-year event, Urban Planning x Public Health: Working Together, on December 14. The event brought together nearly 100 diverse stakeholders to learn, reflect, and discuss how we can collectively work towards achieving healthier and more equitable communities through engagement of the planning process.

Cheryl Anderson (Professor and Dean of the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science, Director of the UC San Diego Center of Excellence in Health Promotion and Equity) was the esteemed keynote speaker and presented on upstream social factors that are deeply structural and strategies to promote positive health outcomes. Dr. Anderson provided the latest scientific data trends highlighting health disparities and discussed how these have been further impacted by COVID-19. Attendees had the opportunity to breakout into groups and further discuss the environmental contributors to childhood obesity and how they might work with our local urban planners to address these issues. The COI appreciated all of the insightful feedback –  and will use this information as part of the Plan4Health Committee launch. If you were not able to attend, do not worry. You can access the Zoom recording of the event انقر هنا.

Thank you all for your support and energy throughout this whole year. We look forward to continuing working with all of our fantastic partners next year!
