On July 12, our Refugee Health Unit was invited to attend African Culture Night. This event was hosted by the City Heights Center for Community Development at their weekly international food and craft marketplace, Fair@44. The goal of Fair@44 is to form a business incubator for local entrepreneurs that are looking to expand their business. There was Caribbean music and West African clothing sold by LK Fashion Design, a nonprofit that helps women learn how to become fashion designers. Our unit partnered with the United Women of East Africa Support Team (UWEAST) to represent the different cultures of the populations that we serve.
While dressed in traditional East African clothing, we promoted the programs that our unit is working on in partnership with UWEAST. Along with providing resources, we created a African jeopardy to spread knowledge about the Horn of Africa. Henna tattoos were also provided, which is a valued tradition across the region. Overall, this event was a wonderful way to showcase the diversity and beauty in African culture. Thank you City Heights CDC for inviting us to join you!
