At the forefront of drought-tolerant and water efficient gardens is Altman Plants, Inc., a wholesale nursery with locations in California, Texas, Colorado and Florida. Altman Plants Inc. prides itself on offering a variety of unique succulent and cacti plants. Ken and Deena Altman, Altman Plants’ founders, started the Center for Applied Horticultural Research (CfAHR), a non-profit organization dedicated to conducting research to help tackle practical problems that growers face on a daily basis. Altman Plants, Inc. is also doing its part to improve its employee health.

Alex Meador, Human Resource Specialist, helped to expand the organization’s wellness committee. With the help of Live Well @ Work, Altman Plants has been able to provide health and wellness education for employees, implement a healthy vending policy, and is in the process of securing healthy onsite lunch vendors to improve their employee’s access to healthy foods and beverages. The wellness programs that Altman Plants, Inc. has offered includes pre-shift stretching routines focusing on the neck, shoulders and back, promoting employee hydration through water-filling stations, and encouraging reusable water bottle usage and nutrition education sessions aimed at reducing sugary beverage consumption. In addition, Altman Plants, Inc. has hosted educational sessions such as CalFresh presentations to promote resources for healthy nutrition and Wells Fargo money management coaching to reduce employee stress. The successful wellness committee at Altman Plants, Inc. encourages other organizations who are interested in starting or expanding an employee wellness Program to design their wellness goals based on employees’ needs and feedback and to invite employees who are interested in health to be a part of their wellness committee initiatives.
