In late February, San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) in coordination with UCSD’s School Wellness team hosted their inaugural Winter Wellness Showcase at Ocean Beach Elementary (OB Elementary) to celebrate their efforts to create a healthier school community. SDUSD School Site Wellness Coordinators, District Wellness Council Members, and San Diego County community partners were invited to tour the school’s campus to see many of their successful wellness strategies in action for students, staff, and families.

The tour was led by OB Elementary’s School Site Wellness Committee, the PTA’s Healthy Choices Sub-Committee, as well as UCSD’s School Wellness team. Featured strategies included school garden curriculum integration, garden to cafe, healthy fundraising, action-based learning, active recess, staff walking paths, and healthy celebrations for students and staff.

After touring the school’s beautiful campus, the group reconvened in the auditorium to participate in a brainstorming activity lead by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. The event also featured a Smart Snacks tasting and all attendees received a Wellness Appreciation Goodie Bag from California Schools VEBA.

One of the goals of the Winter Wellness Showcase was to inspire attendees to take action by bringing some of the examples of successful health and wellness strategies from OB Elementary back to their school. Special thanks to OB Elementary for hosting the event and their continued commitment to the health and wellness of their school.

This event was hosted as a part of the SDUSD Wellness Initiative in an effort to support the health and well-being of all SDUSD students, staff, and families.
