Encanto Elementary School’s Game Leader program provides a more active and engaging lunch recess for kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students by introducing them to structured games demonstrated and lead by 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students (Game Leaders).

At the beginning of the 2018-19 school year, Encanto Elementary invited 3rd-5th grade students to apply to their newly-created Game Leader program. Interested students committed to attend monthly after school trainings and forgo one week of their own lunch recess each month in order to help their younger classmates be more fit and have fun while staying safe.

Following the last training before winter break, the UC San Diego School Wellness team took time to celebrate the hard work, leadership, maturity and dedication shown by Encanto Elementary School’s Game Leaders by hosting a Field Day celebration. Game Leaders were given gift bags and treated to refreshing mint water and apple slices before they participated in some of their own favorite games and activities; hockey and riding scooters! The kids enjoyed celebrating with fun physical activities and we were grateful to recognize the important service Game Leaders provide to their school community.

The Game Leader program at Encanto Elementary resumes in January 2019 after winter break and will continue with support of the School Wellness team through the remainder of the school year. This project is a part of a collaboration with the SDUSD Wellness Initiative in an effort to support the health and well-being of all SDUSD students, staff, and families.
