On Wednesday October 18th, the United Women of East Africa Support Team (UWEAST) and our Refugee Health Unit, co-hosted a Women’s Wellness Fair at the East African Culture and Community Center in City Heights. This event was organized under the Dunya Women’s Health Collaborative to educate refugee women about self-care, nutrition, and well-being. The collaborative is funded by the Office of Woman’s Health under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

In addition to resource tables hosted by local organizations, the fair provided free fitness and nutrition demonstrations. Women participated in free yoga classes to introduce them to meditation and mindfulness. A massage therapist was also available to give attendees massages.

Local agencies graciously donated prize items and yoga equipment for the event. CorePower Yoga donated a certificate for a month of unlimited classes. YMCA Copley donated trial membership passes for all the attendees.

Overall, this event was a success! It was wonderful to see our community learn and enjoy the benefits of self-care.

We thank our partners from the Collaborative: Family Health Centers of San Diego, United Women of East Africa Support Team, International Rescue Committee, the Nile Sisters Development Initiative, and donors for their generous contributions to this event.
