Luis Galvan is a Community Advocacy Project Manager working with our Childhood Obesity Initiative. Luis was born and raised in South San Diego and is passionate about the intersection between medicine, public health, and nutrition. Luis has an MPH with a concentration in Nutrition from CUNY’s School of Public Health and Health Policy and a BA in Integrative Biology from UC Berkeley.

Prior to joining the CCH team, Luis has spent several years working and volunteering within the healthcare system. While in the Bay Area, Luis volunteered as a Health Advocate at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and worked as an Emergency Room Scribe at Alta Bates Hospital. As an Undergraduate Research Intern at UCSF, Luis conducted clinical research at Clinica Martin-Baro, a free clinic that serves the immigrant population in the Mission District. While working as a Pediatric Scribe at San Ysidro Health, Luis became passionate about addressing childhood obesity. After moving to New York City to pursue his MPH in Nutrition, Luis remained focused on addressing health disparities in San Diego County. Upon returning, Luis joined the San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative (COI) as a Program Specialist, where he supported the Business and Healthcare Domains and worked closely with community leaders on CA4LessSoda.

Upon graduating, Luis joined the Office of Supervisor Nora Vargas as a Health Equity Policy Advisor. While at the County, Luis assisted District 1 constituents and organizations on a wide range of issues pertaining to health, education, youth engagement, juvenile justice, food security, child welfare, and childcare. With his expertise working in public policy, Luis is excited to return to the UCSD Center for Community Health to assist with the COI Government Domain and Community Council. Luis aspires to become a physician and lifelong public health advocate that addresses health disparities in San Diego County.

Luis joined the Center for Community Health in 2023.
