Hi, my name is Suriyaan Hussein and I am currently a senior at the Preuss School UCSD. Raised in San Diego by Somali immigrant parents, I have been involved in community work from a young age. While I live a healthy lifestyle- I am a starter on my school basketball team and I participate in the school workout club- as an individual living with Type 1 Diabetes I know how crucial it is to have access to opportunities to live a healthy lifestyle. Being involved in my community has given me lots of great experiences, from meeting with First Lady Michelle Obama to producing a youth film on my culture and improving physical activity opportunities in my neighborhood. I joined the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) in order to help others and my community, and being a youth leader in the YAC has allowed me to advocate for healthy living and eating in San Diego.
